MAY 22, 2020 LISTEN

The Ranking Member on Parliament's Water Resources, Works and Housing Committee, Emmanuel Bedzrah says the lack of consistent flow of water in parts of the country is eroding efforts at fighting COVID-19.

One of the major preventive measure for tackling COVID-19 is the regular washing of hands with soap under running water. But there have been several complaints from residents in parts of Accra and other parts of the country about the irregular flow of water through their taps.

The Ho West MP says the government must urgently cause the Ghana Water Company (GWCL) to quickly resolve all such challenges.

“Water is not flowing. How can we fight this COVID-19 if the basic necessity, water, is not flowing through our tap? The government needs to do something about it immediately so that we can all be on one page of fighting COVID-19,” he said in a Citi News interview.

Among the areas that reported about the lack of potable water was the Ningo Prampram Municipality.

Residents there said they have not experienced consistent water supply for months, compelling them to rely on untreated water from dugout ponds for their domestic use.

Residents said water supply to the community has not been regular since December 2019 and is a major worry now as Ghana deals with the outbreak of COVID-19.

Water challenges solved

The Managing Director of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), Clifford Braimah this week on the Citi Breakfast show said the water shortage in the Tema enclave and other areas had been resolved.

He said the Ghana Water Company provided some areas with water, adding that other areas will soon be catered for as well.

“The Tema problem has been rectified. As at yesterday, some areas have started getting water and eventually other areas will be covered,” he said on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday.
