OCT 13, 2015 LISTEN

To celebrate the great influence of Fela Kuti on Ghanaian music and music at large, Alliance Française Accra will be hosting the official Felabration celebrations in Accra and resonate the festival organized by our Nigerian neighbours and the world at large. The evening, led by Highlife legend Ebo Taylor, will shed light on the greatest Afrobeat artist of all times.

The idea which was generated by Ebo Taylor is to celebrate the Nigerian multi-instrumentalist, musician, composer, pioneer of the Afrobeat music genre, human rights activist, and political maverick, Fela Kuti.

Besides Ebo Taylor, many talented artists will also be on stage to make the night an unforgettable one. Invited by the legendary musician himself, Ambolley, Kyekyeku, Villy & the Xtreme Volumes and Yaa Yaa Kankam will perform their own songs and tributes to Fela for the pleasure of all.

There will also be an exhibition titled ‘Buy Africa’- a celebration of Felaboration posters which will be opened on the night of the concert and until 8th November. It is a treat from Joseph-Oduro Frimpong from Ashesi University .

This exhibition, (the first of its kind in Ghana, and perhaps in the world) with Alliance Francaise’ highlights the legacy of Fela’s music. In doing this, the exhibition aims to call attention to aspects of Fela’s life and music that is worth emulating, that is: to boldly name and shame our political leaders and their cronies whose corrupt practices rob ordinary citizens of a decent life. Furthermore, through the phrase “Buy Africa” which draws from the title of one of Fela’s songs, the exhibition encourages us, in spite of being global citizens, to tone down our appetite for foreign goods and patronize made-in-Africa goods. Here, the goal is to help boost our economy and begin the path of self-sustaining it.

The concert as well as the opening of the exhibition will take place at Alliance Française Accra on Saturday 17th October, 2015 at 8pm.

This event is endorsed by the Felabration Organising Committee (FOC) in Lagos.
