Resist AFRICOM is a campaign comprised of concerned U.S. and Africa-based organizations and individuals opposed to the new U.S. military command for Africa (AFRICOM).
AFRICOM expands of the role of the U.S. military in Africa – potentially shifting humanitarian resources from civilians to military personnel. Traditional diplomacy under the State Department has lost authority to the Department of Defense, putting soldiers at the front of U.S. policy toward Africa.
It is a selfish command, designed to secure U.S. oil interests in Africa, fight terrorism, and counter Chinese economic investment in Africa. Under AFRICOM, true African security and development will be secondary to the interests of the U.S. government and private companies such as oil corporations and private military contractors.
We reject this militarization of foreign engagement. Instead, our vision is a comprehensive U.S. foreign policy grounded in true partnership with the African Union, African governments, and civil society on peace, justice, security, and development.
