GhanaFact To Present Work On Fighting COVID-19 Misinformation At AIJC 2020
The premier annual gathering of African investigative journalists, the 16th African Investigative Journalism Conference will take place from October 6-30, 2020 at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.
This year's conference which will feature more than 50 speakers in workshops, panel discussions and networking sessions, will see the managing editor of GhanaFact, Rabiu Alhassan, join a panel discussion on the spread of COVID-19 misinformation on the African continent: trends and challenges.

French back their nurses and doctors but worry about health system in Covid-19 crisis
A new survey shows that French people have a high level of confidence in the country's health professionals to deal with the Covid-19 crisis but they are worried about the future of the hospital system.
The dissatisfaction expressed by workers in the sector suggests it will have a hard time finding candidates to fill its ranks in the future.

Covid-19's impact on mental health services ‘devastating’, says WHO
Covid-19 has had a devastating impact on access to mental health services, a World Health Organisation survey of 130 countries has found out. According to the survey, the pandemic has either disrupted or halted critical mental health services in 93% of countries worldwide.
While 83 percent of the 130 countries surveyed had included mental health in their coronavirus pandemic response plans only 17 percent had actually set up the full funding required, it said.

Paris closes bars, limits restaurant access as hospitals brace for Covid surge
Paris officials announced Monday bars would close for two weeks after the French capital was placed on the country's highest Covid-19 alert level. Restaurants and universities were allowed to remain open with reduced capacity.
Bars will be closed for at least two weeks as part of new restrictions announced Tuesday as hospitals anticipate an influx of serious Covid-19 cases, though restaurants would be allowed to stay upon under certain conditions.

Covid-19: Trump’s Press Secretary Test Positive For Coronavirus
White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany announced Monday that she has tested positive for the coronavirus, another sign that the virus that has put President Trump in the hospital and killed more than 200,000 Americans is spreading through the White House.
In a statement on Twitter, McEnany said she is not experiencing symptoms. In addition to the president and the first lady, members of Trump’s staff and senior figures in his campaign have tested positive for the coronavirus since last week.

Covid-ridden India to reopen bars, theatres and pools in a season of festivals
Cinemas, swimming-pools, bars and restaurants will reopen in India, while students can attend classes as the government has further eased Covid-19 restrictions at the start of the festival season which will see millions on the streets of the sub-continent this month.
The state of Maharashtra in India's west, which has reported 1.4 million Covid-19 infections so far, decided to allow customers into restaurants and bars from Monday. This is part of the so-called 'Unlock 5.0' exercise to re-start India's moribund economy.

Paris placed under maximum Covid alert, bars, cafés face two-week closure
The French government has declared Paris under maximum Covid-19 alert due to alarmingly high infection numbers, meaning bars and cafés may face a forced two-week shutdown from Tuesday. Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo is to unveil the conditions on Monday. Restaurants look set to remain open under tightened sanitary protocols.
Health Minister Olivier Veran announced on Thursday that only improved Covid-19 infection rates could prevent "total closures" of the city's trademark cafes and bars.

Tunisian hospitals struggling to cope with rise in Covid-19 cases
Tunisian authorities have warned that hospitals are struggling to cope with an influx of Covid-19 patients and urged residents to respect anti-virus measures to avoid another lockdown.
"If we don't manage to flatten this curve, which is really going up, we risk being overwhelmed," Dr Hechmi Louzir, spokesman of the scientific committee for the fight against Covid-19, told AFP.

Noguchi Institute Receives COVID-19 PPE From Olam, Temasek
Accra, October 2, 2020: - Olam International, a leading food and agri-business, in partnership with Singapore-based Temasek Foundation has donated a consignment of PPE to the Government of Ghana to support national efforts in the fight against COVID -19.
The consignment comprised various items of PPE including 3,000 surgical gowns, face shields, KN95 masks, and nitrile gloves. They were delivered to the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research through the Ministry of Health.

ECA And IIF Host Private Investors, African Finance And Development Ministers To Discuss Covid-19
The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the Institute of International Finance (IIF) released the following statement after a virtual meeting of delegates representing African finance and development ministries, and the private creditor community to discuss the role of the private sector in supporting low-income countries through the COVID-19 crisis, and driving post-pandemic development.
“We all agree that access to private capital is essential to economic growth and development, the post-COVID-19 recovery, as well as raising living standards and creating greater prosperity across Africa. Given the importance of private capital, and its growing role in Africa over the last decade, it is crucial that countries with market access and the appropriate macroeconomic framework continue to have the opportunity to this access as a complement to concessional financing. A number of these countries have pursued policies to increase investor confidence, attract investment, obtain greater market access, and lower their cost of capital – these efforts must be encouraged. Similarly, new initiatives to help further lower the cost of capital must be encouraged and implemented swiftly - such as the creation of repo markets for frontier issuances as part of the Liquidity and Sustainability Facility. Where additional liquidity can be provided it must be the priority.”
