France records nearly 16,000 single-day spike of new coronavirus cases

France on Friday reported 15, 797 new cases of the coronavirus in 24 hours. It was slightly less than the previous day's record of over 16,000 infections but serious enough to prompt health officials to confirm an upward trend in Covid-19 and could add weight to calls for stricter measures.

Fifty-six people died of Covid-19 in a single day in France on Friday, four more than the day before.

Covid-19: Mathematical model shows second wave likely to last until January

A new mathematical model developed by researchers from France and Italy suggests that the second wave of Covid-19 infections in Europe is likely to last until the January of next year.

Giacomo Cacciapaglia, who along with Corentin Cot and Francesco Sannino, told RFI that the predicted time-evolution of the second wave of the European COVID-19 pandemic could help authorities prepare and implement effective measures.

France records highest ever number of Covid-19 infections

France's latest figures show that 16,096 people have been infected with the coronavirus over the last 24 hours, an increase of 3,024 cases. The number is the highest ever in France since the start of the pandemic. The death toll rose to 52, from 43 the previous day.

According to the website of the French health authorities, updated every evening, 6,5 percent of people tested were positive. This rate has been growing steadily over the past few days, from 4,1.

EU urges member states to boost anti-Covid measures to prevent second wave

The European Commission's health spokeswoman has called on EU members states to communicate better and enforce social distancing and hygiene rules to halt a new wave of coronavirus infections. The appeal comes as several countries, including France and Spain, announced tougher restrictions to curb the Covid-19 spread.

"In some member states, the situation is now even worse than during the peak in March. This is a real cause for concern," EU health commissioner Stella Kyriakides said on Thursday.

Furious French cities demand rethink of new Covid-19 restrictions

Authorities in Marseille have called on the French government to suspend “shocking” new sanitary measures that will force the closure of bars and restaurants in “maximum alert” zones including the Aix-Marseille area and Guadeloupe.

First Deputy Mayor Benoît Payan on Thursday asked for a 10-day delay to the new restrictions – announced Wednesday night by Health Minister Olivier Véran.

France bans parties in Paris, other big cities, under tough new anti-Covid rules

Gatherings of more than 10 people will be banned and bars made to close early in Paris and eight other major cities from Saturday, as France introduces a new alert system to stem an end-of summer surge of coronavirus infections.

Health Minister Olivier Véran announced the measures Wednesday in his weekly press conference, warning: "If we don't take action quickly, we risk reaching critical thresholds in some regions.”

France boosts flu vaccine production to avoid double epidemic with Covid

The French government has ordered 30 percent more seasonal flu vaccine in anticipation of increased demand because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Experts hope increased participation in this year's vaccine campaign will save hospitals from having to face two epidemics at the same time.

France's health ministry said late Monday the country had ordered nearly one-third more doses of the flu vaccine than usual, in anticipation of increased demand when the annual campaign begins in mid-October.

France to declare Paris, other major cities ‘super red' Covid hotspots

France is to raise the Covid-19 alert to its highest level in cities including Paris, amid surge in cases that will see virus hotspots declared “super red” or “scarlet” zones on a new map to be released Wednesday.

New restrictions including a potential ban on the sale of takeaway alcohol after 8pm, and on gatherings of more than 10 people, are to be announced as Health Minister Olivier Véran unveils an updated map of the virus's circulation.

No COVID-19 Case Recorded During Voter Registration Exercise – EC

The Electoral Commission (EC) says none of the 17 million voters captured in the recent voters’ registration exercise and the 45,000 registration officers, contracted COVID-19 during the nationwide exercise.

Dr Bossman Eric Asare, Deputy Chairman of the EC in-charge of Corporate Services, said at the end of the voters' registration exercise, the Commission's checks with the relevant state authorities such as the Ghana Health Service (GHS) and the National COVID-19 Task Force, revealed that no single person had been reported of having contracted COVID-19 during the process of registering as a voter.

Liberia's Weah orders dismissal of healthcare workers on Covid strike

Striking Liberian health workers who are demanding salary increases and hazardous pay for working during the Covid-19 pandemic are to be fired and replaced, following a new directive by President George Weah.

The government says that despite initial steps to peacefully resolve the situation, the leadership of the National Health Workers Union of Liberia (NAHWUL) refuses to compromise during negotiations.

Achimota Retail Centre has set off its month-long fifth-anniversary celebration in a public-spirited fashion, with the donation of a consignment of medical supplies and PPEs to the Achimota Hospital in Accra.

Bayern fans return Super Cup final tickets over coronavirus "super spreader" fears

Around 800 Bayern Munich supporters have returned tickets for the Uefa Super Cup final in Hungary over fears the match could become a "super spreader" event.

Budapest's Puskas Arena will host the match on Thursday night between Bayern, who beat Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 to lift the Champions League and Sevilla, who saw off Inter Milan 3-2 to claim the Europa League.

English pubs ordered to shut early as UK’s Johnson tightens Covid curbs

The British government has tightened restrictions to stem a rising tide of coronavirus cases, with Prime Minister Boris Johnson ordering pubs, bars and restaurants across England to shut early, and abandoning calls for people to return to the workplace.

More restrictions were forthcoming in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
