23.09.2017 LISTEN

Fufu is made from boiled unripe plantain and cassava, which is pounded and kneaded.

It is pounded using a wooden pestle and mortar.

Fufu is a starchy staple across Africa. In Ghana it is prepared with cassava, plantain, cocoyam and yam. In some countries, it is prepared with potatoes, bananas, cornmeal and semolina.

Fufu can be eaten with a variety of soups such as, palm-nut, peanut, and light soups among others.

Some Ghanaians love fufu so much that a day without fufu equals starving. However, the tedious job associated with pounding fufu has made many given up on their favorite dish.

One could pound fufu for about 30 minutes, whilst another navigates the mixture to achieve a smooth texture.

Some children and even adults, go into hiding whenever it’s time to pound fufu for the family. Others feign sickness to escape pounding fufu. The funny aspect is, they come back home to enjoy after it’s pounded and ready to eat.

Everybody loves fufu but nobody wants to be tasked with the job of pounding it.

Over time, food bloggers and caterers have been exploring ways fufu could be enjoyed without the hustle of pounding and it has paid off.

Here is a list of innovative ways to get your poundered textured fufu without actually pounding.

1. You can blend the uncooked cassava and plantain in a blender. Make sure to add water to the ingredients in the blender. Pour into a pot and put it on fire. Stir continuously and steadily till you achieve the thick fufu texture.

2. Blend uncooked cassava and plantain. Pour it and put it in a microwave for between 10 to 15 minutes. Remember to cover the microwave bowl to get a perfect fufu. Others say this method is unhealthy because of the microwave being used. (You know all the research on health risks associated with microwave)

3. You can also take your cooked plantain and cassava to the commercial fufu pounding centre in your community. They have fufu pounding machines to sort you out. Some have reservations so far as hygiene is concerned with this method.

4. There are sets of portable fufu machines in the market for domestic use. Prices range from GH¢500.00 to GH¢1000.00. You can get yourself one and save yourself the hassle.
