prayer of agreement

Mathew 18: 18-20

Jesus taught us that one of the factors which make prayer effective is agreement. Some people call this the prayer of agreement. When we walk together with others, God's creativity is unleashed (Genesis 1:26; 11:6). The issue of agreement in prayer is not just a formula. It is much more than the holding of hands when praying or praying about the same prayer points. For us to get heaven to work in our situations, we need to align with the pattern of heaven. It is also important that our prayer points should be in alignment with God's will (1 John 5:14). Unity is absolutely necessary if corporate prayer is going to be effective. Jesus lets us know that what makes our prayers powerful and effective is His presence; not our eloquence, volume or posture when praying (Matthew 18:20). Agreement in prayer guarantees the presence of Jesus and His presence guarantees miracles.

Couples should learn to leverage on this provision “if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven”. Husbands and wives should learn to pray together and agree together in prayer. This is one of the greatest advantages of marriage (1 Peter 3:7). Families will see tremendous answers to prayer if we would learn to pray in agreement. Agreement in prayer is much more than praying together in the same room or holding hands when praying; it is praying in symphony and harmonising when praying (Matthew 18: 18-20 AMP). Agreement in prayer is in the quality of the relationship between the people who are praying together (Matthew 6: 9-12; 18: 21). The quality of our relationship with the people around us will impact on the effectiveness of our prayers (Galatians 5:6). Faith will only work through love; not the works that we carry out on God's behalf. Forgiveness is one the great conditions for agreement in prayer to work (Mark 11: 22-26). When we are walking in love just two of us can shake the earth and bring about positive change.

Unforgiveness is certain to hinder our prayers (1 Peter 3:7). The purity of heart of those who are praying causes God's anointing and Spirit to flow from the leadership down on the members (Psalm 133). At every point in time, we need to ensure we are free from hatred, bitterness, malice and other such negative emotions. The power of the early Church was in the unity and love among the brethren (Acts 4:23-24, 29-34). We cannot gossip about others and then go to God in prayer. Such prayers will remain unanswered. Once we are free from selfishness, envy, schism and division, we will see the power of God flow (1 Corinthians 3: 1-3). It is wrong to think that another human being is your enemy. We have a common enemy and that is Satan Matthew 16: 15-23). All of us lose when we do not love and cannot forgive. We would make more progress if we walk in love much more than we currently do. Today, ask God to take away from you, every form of hatred, malice and every capacity for dysfunction in relationships. The Holy Spirit is available to help us overcome the challenges we face in our relationships.
