Breef History Of Valentine's Day

Breef History Of Valentines Day

Every year on February 14th, a lot of people exchange their particular Valentine with cards, candies, presents, or flowers. The Roman feast known as "Lupercalia" is the source of the romantic event that we call Valentine's Day, which dates back to the fifth century and is named for a Christian martyr. In addition to the mythical founders of Rome, Romulus and Remus, the festival of Lupercalia was held to commemorate the gods Lepercus and Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture.

Valentine, sometimes called as Valentinus, was a priest and a bishop of the church near Rome around the year 270 A.D., according to Roman Catholic church tradition and RT. Bishop Osei-Bonsu, 2004 (Catholic Traditions and Believes). Marriage was prohibited at the time by an edict issued by Claudius II, the Roman Emperor. With its current armies, the Roman empire was too big to be protected from both internal unrest and exterior assault. As a result, more competent men needed to be enlisted as commanders and soldiers. Claudius believed that married men would not be good warriors because they were more emotionally devoted to their families. He outlawed marriage to ensure the quality of his warriors in the army. A bishop named Valentine or Valentinus visited young lovers in a hidden location and engaged them in the sacrament of holy matrimony after observing their trauma. On February 24, 270 A.D., Emperor Claudius found this ‘friend of lovers’, "Valentine or Valentinus," had him arrested, and had him put to death.

Valentine met his jailer, Asterius, as he was incarcerated awaiting his fate. Valentine or Valentinus was asked to heal the jailer's blind daughter. His daughter miraculously recovered her sight thanks to his faith. Prior to his execution, Valentine or Valentinus requested a pen from his jailer, Asterius, and signed "FROM YOUR VALENTINE" as farewell to Asterius' daughter. This phrase has endured ever since. As a result, Valentine or Valentinus, became the patron saint of lovers and the spiritual leader of the Lepercus and Faunus celebration held every year. On February 14, the young Romans participated in the celebration by presenting handwritten notes of affection to women they admired and wanted to court. The name of Saint Valentine or Valentinus is displayed on the greeting cards. Pope Gerasius proclaimed February 14 "SAINT VALENTINE'S DAY" in 489 A.D. to commemorate the martyr Valentinus, also known as Valentine, and to put an end to the pagan holiday.

Due to the combined effect of all of the aforementioned factors, Valentine's Day has become a hugely popular festival among the general public today. In observance of Valentine's Day, lovers started exchanging "VALENTINE" letters with their sweethearts. Sending handcrafted cards was popular in the beginning, but from the start of the 19th century, mass-produced greeting cards became popular. Throughout time, "Valentine's Day" became recognized as a celebration of love, not simply romantic love. Teachers, parents, friends, siblings, and sweethearts are all given "VALENTINE'S DAY" cards these days. Valentine's Day has gained popularity in nations on all seven (7) continents and continues to grow every year.
