Coronavirus is a disease that has claimed a lot of lives across the world. Scientists all over the world are doing their best to develop a vaccine and drug to mitigate the threats posed by this virus. In view of all these, nature has provided man with an inherent ability to fight this virus and any other infections. The human body is made up of different systems which come together to make you a complete being. These systems include the Reproductive System, Digestive System, Cardiovascular System, Respiratory System, Integumentary System, Nervous System, Skeletal System, Muscular System, Endocrine System, Excretory System, and Immune System.

All these systems work in synergy to achieve the total body function. Should one system be compromised, it affects the functioning of other systems hence the need to stay healthy at all times so none of the systems may be compromised.

THE IMMUNE SYSTEM (NATURES REMEDY)
The Immune System is a very complex system with different organs and processes within the system playing different roles to achieve a common goal which is to protect you from infections and toxins. You can liken your human body to a Nation; your immune system then becomes the defense ministry of that nation which protects you from invaders and intruders. For example, the skin serves as a barrier to prevent infections from getting into the your system but should an infection be able to cross this barrier either through ulcers (wounds), food, water, air etc., and gets into your system, the activities of your immune system is activated. When this happens, white blood cells engulf and destroy the pathogen (infections) while the lymphocytes are triggered to make antibodies against that specific infection. The antibodies serve as an information storage for the your system for future reference. This means that should same infection infect you in future, the system for destroying such an infection is already in place to take care of you. Example is Chicken pox disease which you only get once.

There are certain conditions in which the Immune System is compromised and they include;

  1. Primary Immune Deficiency. This is when one is born with a weak immune system
  2. Acquired Immune Deficiency. This is when you get a disease or lifestyle that weakens your immune system. Eg. AIDs, Alcohol, Smoking or poor nutrition
  3. Autoimmune Disease. This is when your immune system turns against you. Eg. Type 1 Diabetes, Rheumatoid arthritis
  4. Overactive Immune System. This is when your immune system is overactive. eg. Asthma, allergies Eczema

LIFESTYLE CHANGES TO BOOST YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM

  1. Avoid Smoking. Smoking lowers the levels of antioxidants such as vitamin C in the blood and make you susceptible to infections
  2. Exercise regularly. Exercising improves circulation and cause WBCs circulate more rapidly
  3. Avoid Alcohol. Consumption of alcohol compromises the internal flora of microorganisms as well as destroying intestinal cells that might have help you fight diseases
  4. Adequate Sleep. Adults are expected to sleep for about seven to eight hours. Sleeping releases a chemical call cytokines which play a vital role in inflammatory response
  5. Eat a lot of green vegetables. Green vegetables such as spinach, lettuce, cocoyam leaves(kontomire), jute leaves (ayoyo), turkey berries (Kwahu nsusua) contain a lot of vitamins and minerals that protect immune cells and enhance their activities

FRUITS AND VEGETABLES TO BOOST YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM

  1. CITRUS FRUITS such as oranges, lemons contains high amount of vitamin C which increase production of white blood cells
  2. GARLIC stimulates immune cells and enhance their activities
  3. GINGER also contains gingerol which help to decrease inflammation
  4. SPINACH is rich in vitamin C, antioxidants and beta carotene which all help your immune system fight infections
  5. PAWPAW also contains a lot of vitamin C to increase your white blood cell production
