THE FORGOTTEN LOCAL FOODS: 'Awiesu' a.k.a 'Bamfo Bisi'

This one leads us on a trip down memory lane, isn't it? We have here today, 'Awiesu' also known as 'Bamfo bisi'.

This is a nutritious and delicious fried snack made from milled corn, sugar and usually has roasted groundnuts embedded in them.

This delicacy of a snack has an external crunchiness and inner softness when freshly fried. However, it hardens up when cold. Once cold, you would need to exercise your jaws to enjoy them.

Awiesu is caloric — mainly filled with carbohydrates and gives you instant energy, when required. The dipping groundnuts provide good fats and proteins as well. Though energy-dense, the chaff (dietary fibre) of the milled corn further promotes satiety.

For the underweight hoping to gain some kilos with small frequent meals, this is a caloric snack for you. It's tastiness makes it even more appropriate for children — especially when not too hard to chew.

Next time in town, spare some time to look for the 'Awiesu' seller and taste the healthy goodness of a typical Ghanaian snacks. Let's forget not our food roots. There is still good right here. Still, 'Ghana wɔ adze a oye'!

FOOD IS YOUR BEST MEDICINE.
