Mr Samuel Ohene, head of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Ghana Medical School, has said that about 20 out of every 100 women are expected to experience depression once in their life time.
Depression is a medical condition in which a person feels very sad and anxious and often has physical symptoms such as being unable to sleep and concentrate.
Speaking in an interview with the Times, he said this is likely to happen among women in adulthood.
He said one out of every five women is prone to experiencing some degree of depression.
Mr Ohene attributed the causes of depression to chemical imbalance that might occur in the brain and emphasised that child birth among grown-up women was also likely to cause depression.
“Such people, in most cases, cannot control themselves and need special attention”, he said, and advised people to pay particular attention to their health.
