Any hope for Mentor?
It's been over six weeks, 4 evictions down the line in the fourth season of Ghana's most followed singing competition and so far there hasn't been an emergence of a clear winner. This can be attributed the general lack in brilliance in this season's competition. This time around, there are 15 contestants drawn from five regions of Ghana and one would expect that this increase would have had some proportional increment in the levels of excitement in the competition. Sadly the story is rather the opposite, most of the performances in the competition have been so far average and uninspiring, and in fact most of the Mentor fans I know say that this season is the worst ever. I get the feeling that even TV3, the producers of the show, feels the same way as they have not given so much attention to the show on their website like in previous seasons.
So what went wrong? Was it in the selection process? If so, haven't the judges been doing this for long enough to know how to choose the right people for the contest? Each week I keep saying to myself that perhaps the theme for that particular week didn't suit the class of the contestants but six weeks in and several themes along the line, there seem to be no hope. Angel, Serwaa, Chris and a few others continue to show some promise but not enough to sustain viewership or win new viewership for Mentor. The studio audience as usual is encouraging; I mean who wouldn't like to attend a free show on Sunday evening? There has been a great improvement in the production this season; the stage setting is very cool and functional this time around and before evictions are made, we are able to view a reel on the performances from the evening. Great developments; but I just wish the same progression would show in the talent on the show.
