Ghanaian musician and socialite, Sister Derby, has once again sparked controversy with her bold and unconventional views on relationships and societal norms.
In a video making the rounds on social media, the “Uncle Obama” hitmaker described marriage as “another form of prostitution,” a statement that has ignited debate across various online platforms.
The video, which appears to be an excerpt from an interview, captures Sister Derby candidly sharing her perspective on the institution of marriage.
According to her, the traditional practice of paying a bride price equates to a transaction, which she believes aligns closely with the concept of prostitution.
"Marriage is another form of prostitution. You pay the bride price. You pay for the pussy for life," Sister Derby said in the clip, without mincing words.
Her comment, though controversial, is not entirely out of character. Known for her unapologetic views and advocacy for women’s independence, Sister Derby has often challenged societal expectations, especially those concerning women, relationships, and marriage. Her latest remarks, however, have struck a nerve with a wide audience, attracting both criticism and support.
Critics argue that her statement is disrespectful to cultural values and undermines the sanctity of marriage, especially within African societies where the concept of bride price is deeply rooted in tradition and seen as a symbol of respect and union between families. Others, however, applaud her for being bold enough to say what many may only think, seeing her viewpoint as a critique of how patriarchal systems commodify women under the guise of tradition.
This is not the first time Sister Derby has stirred public conversation with her thoughts on relationships. Over the years, she has remained vocal about issues of gender equality, personal freedom, and the need for society to evolve in its thinking about love, sex, and commitment.
