Shatta Wale's godfather in FBI's crosshairs: Kofi Boakye fights extradition

Ghanaian businessman Kofi Boakye, widely known as the godfather of dancehall artiste Shatta Wale, is challenging an extradition request by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) at the Gbese District Court.

Boakye’s legal team is disputing the legitimacy of the U.S. arrest warrant, arguing that it was not properly authenticated by Ghana’s diplomatic mission in the United States—a legal requirement for its acceptance in Ghanaian courts.

FBI records show that Frederick Asante, who has links to Boakye, was involved in fund transfers totaling under $300,000 to various suppliers. This figure significantly contradicts earlier media reports which cited $100 million, casting doubt on whether the transactions were criminal in nature or part of legitimate business dealings.

Boakye has insisted that he is prepared to voluntarily appear before U.S. authorities to clear his name and protect his business reputation. He also denied any association with three other individuals facing similar charges, stating that his only connection is with Frederick Asante.

The Gbese District Court has adjourned the case to July 1 for a ruling on whether the extradition request meets legal standards. According to Ghanaian law, extradition is only permissible if the alleged offenses are considered crimes in both jurisdictions.

The Office of the Attorney General is overseeing the process and coordinating with U.S. authorities. Should the court approve the request, Boakye could be sent to the United States to face prosecution.
