A new film festival and awards scheme, the Regal Film Festival and Awards (REFFA), has been launched in Accra to celebrate and promote Africa’s rich storytelling tradition and cinematic excellence.
The maiden edition of REFFA marks a bold step in spotlighting African talent, aiming to become a premier cultural event that honors film achievements, nurtures emerging creators, and provides global visibility for African narratives.
At the launch, Festival Executive Director Selassie Ibrahim highlighted the need for a united front to amplify Africa’s creative voice: “African cinema is thriving — from Ghana to Nigeria, Senegal, Kenya, and South Africa — and it’s time the world experiences the full power of our stories, our voices, and our talents. This festival is not just a celebration but a movement to elevate African film,” she stated.
REFFA will span four days, featuring film screenings, panel sessions, masterclasses, and cultural exhibitions, ending with a high-profile awards ceremony celebrating excellence across multiple genres.
Open to filmmakers across Africa and the diaspora, the festival aims to foster creative exchange and international collaboration while positioning African film as a vital cultural and commercial force.
The launch drew stakeholders from across the film and media landscape, including business leaders, government officials, creatives, and cultural advocates—all expressing strong backing for the initiative.
Submissions officially open on July 10, 2025, via FilmFreeway, with categories such as Feature Film, Animation, Documentary, Comedy, and Short Film. Interested filmmakers can visit www.reffaawards.com for full guidelines.
