Ghanaian Reggae/Dancehall artiste, Theophilus Nii Arday Otoo, popularly known as Epixode, has revealed that he received anonymous threats after the release of his 2019 song, ‘Wahala Dey’.

The track, which highlights some of Ghana’s core societal issues, made strong references to the legacy of the country’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, and Ghana’s failure to sustain it.

Speaking on Accra-based GTV on Thursday, May 15, the musician said the threats made him fear for his safety and that of his family.

“Wahala Dey was one of my biggest tracks, regardless of the threats I got behind the scenes. I was getting anonymous threats and had to stop performing it. I took it out of my playlist for a very long time,” he said.

He added, “Sometimes, you are not even the target. You can be the target, and your family will suffer. I don’t know who it was—whether a political party or not—but it was really scary.”

At the 26th edition of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards, held on Saturday, May 10, Epixode won the Music for Good award with his song ‘Chooboi’, recognised for its positive societal impact.

Reacting to the award, he said, “This was the least of the songs we released last year, but at least it’s getting that recognition. I’m really grateful.”
