In a landmark ruling, Peter Nwachukwu, the husband of the late gospel star Osinachi Nwachukwu, has been sentenced to death by hanging after being found guilty of killing his wife.
The verdict was delivered on Monday by the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, after a tense trial and the rejection of Nwachukwu’s no-case submission. Justice Njideka Nwosu-Iheme, who presided over the emotional proceedings, declared Nwachukwu guilty of culpable homicide for his role in Osinachi’s tragic death on April 8, 2022.
The courtroom erupted with emotion as the judge’s decision was announced, bringing a sense of justice to the devastating case. Osinachi, a beloved figure in Nigeria’s gospel music community, had suffered months of abuse before her life was taken by her husband.
The case, which has attracted widespread national and international attention, revealed harrowing details of the abusive relationship, sparking outrage across the country. Nwachukwu had been in custody for several months before the verdict was delivered.
This ruling represents a pivotal moment in Nigeria's fight against domestic violence, sending a clear message that such atrocities will not go unpunished. Following the sentence, many have commended the justice system for its stance on holding abusers accountable.
The case has reignited calls for stronger protections for victims of domestic violence and greater public awareness of the issue, urging authorities to take more decisive actions to prevent further tragedies.
