After several weeks of scouting, 16 brainy and bold belles have been selected to vie for the crown at stake in this year's television reality beauty show, Miss Malaika 2008.

The stunners were introduced to the public at a brief ceremony held, last Saturday, at the Crown Apartment Hotel in Accra.

For 13 weeks, the beauties will share the space, good times as well as “the not-so-good times” in the Malaika House.

Six of them will be evicted for their lack of public support as per the phone sms voting system while the remaining 10 will mount the stage at the National Theatre in Accra to vie for the grand finale.

The lucky 16 include Nadra Osman, Racheal Obeng-Somuah, Sandra Odamtten, Sermira Adams, Tamara Aku Dzormeku, Naa Yemoley Tetteh, Yvonne Eyram Kofigah and Ama Sitsofe Sedegah.

The rest are Akosua Agyemang-Abrokwah, Faustina Michelle Ayonka, Christabel Ekeh, Christine Ofori, Daisy Edem Attu, Erika Thompson, Ivy Wereh and Mamata Adams.

They were selected from tens of wannabe beauty queens in the northern sector of Ghana who thronged the Miklin Hotel in Kumasi and those from the south who swarmed the Erata Hotel in Accra to catch the eyes of the scouting team.

As usual some of the prospective beauty queens who took part in the auditions displayed some appreciable levels of intelligence and flashed some natural physical beauty while others were simply inarticulate and also had looks not cut for beauty pageants.

Executive Director of Charter House, the organisers of the show, Theresa Ayoade told the guests that Miss Malaika is the representation of Ghanaian beauty who possesses a unique combination of traditional and contemporary values.

The Deputy Minister of Tourism Hon. Kofi Osei Ameyaw urged the public to stop condemning beauty pageants as they have proven, over the years, to be solid stepping stones for young ladies who wanted to achieve something for themselves and country.

He cited the US Republican Vice Presidential nominee, Sarah Palin, who was said to be a former beauty queen.
