Renowned Ghanaian gospel musician Joe Mettle has emphasised the need for musicians to focus on developing strong character alongside cultivating their gifts.
Speaking at the Band Experience Music Workshop in Manchester, UK on June 22, the award-winning singer noted that while having a gift is important, it is not enough on its own.
“Gift is important, but gift itself is not enough. You need to improve on the gift God has already given you," he said in a virtual message to attendees.
The musician went on to stress that character plays a crucial role in sustaining a career in music over the long run.
“I also want to say one other thing, character is also necessary, because gifted as you can be without character, trust me, many people will find it difficult having to work with you," Joe Mettle remarked.
He explained that although raw talent may open doors initially, strong character is what allows artists to remain successful long-term.
“Sometimes the gift will open the door for you, make a way for you to go to a place, but it is only character that will keep you there and keep you running," the musician pointed out.
Joe Mettle advised musicians to regularly reflect on developing their character as they hone their skills.
“As you learn, as you improve, as you grow in your craft, please be mindful that character is what will keep you there even though gift can open the door for you to get to that point,” he said.
