Ghanaian rapper Kwaw Kese is considering legal action against the Ghana Police Service, demanding $1 million in damages for what he thinks was a wrongful arrest and conviction for consuming marijuana, known locally as 'weed.'

The artiste claims that several foreign nationals have reportedly broken the same regulations without incurring legal penalties.

Kwaw Kese stated in an interview with Hitz FM, which was monitored by ModernGhana News, that he intends to discuss with his lawyers a legal action against the Ghana Police.

“Even with mine, they don't have any proof that I was doing that. There's no shot that they could show to say ‘we saw Kwaw Kese doing this’. It's a hearsay and I was jailed for it. They don't have any pictures to prove it,” Kwaw Kese said.

Highlighting the apparent double standard, Kwaw Kese went on to say, "This is the same Ghana, the same police that arrested me are now bodyguarding with guns, guarding somebody who is not a Ghanaian to smoke in public, and it is live on video and everything, and that person goes scot-free."

Kwaw Kese also claimed that the event had a negative influence on his reputation and growing career at the time, noting that other foreign nationals had engaged in similar behaviour without incurring the legal wrath.

“I have proof, I have evidence that shows that other foreign nationals have come to do the same thing I was jailed for. If this is how it is, then I have to be compensated for the disgrace and what they did to me and my name,” Kwaw Kese added.

Meanwhile, in 2015, the rapper was sentenced to one day in jail and a GHs1,200 fine for narcotics crimes.

Popcaan, a Jamaican rapper, was observed openly smoking what seemed to be marijuana during Ghana's Year of Return festivities in 2020.

Kwaw Kese, outraged by the apparent disparity in treatment, criticised the Ghana Police for not taking similar action against the foreign artist, stating, “Only in Ghana foreigners can f**k up like this.

“When @kwawkese smoked in public he was arrested. So this means our Law is set only to control the citizens but foreigners are free to go.”
