The African Muzik Magazine Awards (AFRIMMA) recently drew criticism after mistakenly labeling renowned Ghanaian musician King Promise as Nigerian.

King Promise won the 'Best Male West Africa' award at the 2023 AFRIMMA ceremony held in Dallas, Texas on September 17.

However, in their social media post announcing his win, AFRIMMA identified King Promise as being Nigerian rather than his actual nationality of Ghanaian.

The glaring lapse in fact-checking King Promise's nationality has drawn criticism of AFRIMMA for not exercising proper diligence.

As a premier pan-African music award scheme, many expect it to accurately recognize the country of origin for the artists they honor.

Prominent Ghanaian entertainment journalist Olele Salvador called out the award scheme over the error.

In a tweet on Monday, September 18, he said "since when did King Promise become Nigerian? You sat down, opened your illustrator/photoshop, failed to crosscheck or do due diligence and proclaim King Promise as Nigerian? & still went ahead to post it on your IG? Nobody could draw y’all attention before upload?"

The error still remains on AFRIMMA's social media post announcing his win at the time of publishing, raising questions about the thoroughness of their awards verification process.
