Ghanaian singer Kuami Eugene has responded to allegations made by 9-year-old artist Fotocopy that he refused him a feature on his song over petty reasons.

According to Fotocopy, Kuami Eugene turned down his request for a collaboration on the grounds that his numbers were too small, leaving him disappointed.

"Kuami Eugene, I don't want to talk about it. In the whole industry, he is an artiste I hate. I hate him because of what he told me it took me more than a week to eat... he told me that my numbers were really small and he couldn't feature me," Fotocopy disclosed on Bryt TV.

However, Kuami Eugene in an interview on Accra-based Joy Prime, denied these claims, noting that securing a feature is not as simple as a casual conversation.

As an award-winning artist, features must be well-planned in order to maintain the value of his brand.

“So it takes good conversation to just do a feature. Kuami Eugene is not just there to do features with everyone. It takes good conversation to have a feature,” he said.

Kuami Eugene explained that while he knows Fotocopy from meeting his father at his manager, Richie Mensah’s home, where they were enjoying a meal together, collaboration is not as straightforward as an introduction.

“Whatever am about to say is not to the little boy because he is just a young boy. He doesn't understand some of the words he used...I was at Richie’s mum's place and we were eating Omotuo...the little guy and Qwaachi came along.

“Qwaachi is his father and he introduced me to him and I said I already knew Fotocopy. His father said his boy needed a feature and I said actually, it doesn't work like that,” Kuami Eugene recalled.

As an artist who has risen from humble beginnings, Kuami Eugene understands the desire for features and collaborations to boost one's profile.

However, he notes that as a headline act, he must be strategic about every collaboration to ensure his own career progression.

“I am from Fadama, I left the hood and have over 50 boys...if I say am featuring everyone, the career will end and we will both not benefit,” he reasoned.

While Kuami Eugene acknowledges Fotocopy’s talent and passion as a young artist, he hopes to foster understanding that features and collaborations must be well-considered to be mutually beneficial.
