For some time now, a number of musicians and other stakeholders have been calling on Ghanaian DJs to promote their works instead of giving space to Nigerian songs.

Some contended that the Ghanaian DJ would ask the Ghanaian artiste to pay before getting rotation but would hurriedly download a foreign song and promote for free. Last year, a campaign to have 80% Ghanaian songs played on local channels started but was greeted with mixed reactions.

Popular Comedian DKB has also start a campaign to have Ghanaian songs played to commemorate the Year of Return. The comedian, in a video argued that “it is only sensible for us to position our music in such a way that these foreigners who are coming will go back with Ghana music.”

DKB’s assertion generated backlash from well-versed Ghanaian Dj, Andy Dosty. The presenter and DJ with Hitz FM in his rebuttal accused DKB of double standard after sighting a video which captures the comedian dancing to Nigerian songs.

The recent person to share his view on the issue is sensational UK-based Ghanaian Afro gospel musician ,Joseph Matthew aka JM. In a video he shared on his Instagram Page,JM indicated that:

” Nigerian musicians are doing well now and instead of us appreciating them, and stepping up our game, we are rather shutting them down by saying Ghanaian Djs shouldn’t play their songs..this is ridiculous …it doesn’t make sense to me at all…Ghanaian Djs must play good music; it doesn’t matter where the artiste is coming from”.

"Those criticising are acting like we are scared of the Nigerian artistes and don’t have the fire power to put our music out there to the world…Many Ghanaian musicians like Joe Mettle, Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy are doing extremely well internationally…Fela Kuti is known around the world but he came to Ghana, learnt our Highlife and took to it to Nigeria and made it big— this is what we must also do”.JM said

He continued,” Other female artistes in Ghana like Wiyaala,Sherifa Gunu are great artistes who are doing so well…I’m told Wendy Shay is the biggest female artiste in Ghana now but I don’t rate artistes who sing in auto tune…to be an artiste you should be able to sing on key…now we live in a disco tech where artistes sing in auto tunes ,that’s why the music don’t last”.

JM, who is currently out with the Single track titled “Nyame Ye” advised that,”Please Ghanaian DJs, don’t stop playing Nigerian songs because they’re doing good music just like Ghanaians and we are all one people ,one Continent and one Africa so we gonna support each other and work in partnership…Thanks”.
