AUG 23, 2018 LISTEN

Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) organized by Africa Magic in association with MultiChoice is set to celebrate the great talents in the movie and television industry across Africa who creatively tell our stories through films, documentaries and series.

Some of these categories include: Best Make-up, Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Sound Editing, Best Video Editing, Best Lighting Designer and Best Costume Designer. Of the twenty-five categories in this year’s awards, Ghana won nomination in seven categories with the biggest scoring movie being Potato Potahto produced by Sparrow Production.

The list of nominees from Ghana include Shirley Frimpong Manso, Adjetey Anang, Chris Attoh and Lydia Forson amongst others. The movie Potato Potahto received five nominations in different categories including overall Best Movie in West Africa. The same movie was also selected for best costume designs from Christie Brown and Shirley Frimpong Manso also listed on the nominee list for Overall Best Director.

The African movie industry is growing at a pace very few could have predicted few years ago and the gap in quality between our content and our western counterparts is quickly closing. This is in-no-small way due to the commendable improvement in the quality of work done behind the scenes. Now, thanks to the AMVCA we finally get a chance to celebrate these people who have played a huge part in our blossoming industry.

To further close this quality gap MultiChoice has introduced an initiative that will offer 60 young persons in film from across the continent a one-year internship at the MultiChoice Talent Factory Academy. Ghana is expected to have four persons selected to attend this academy to be based in Lagos and headed by the acclaimed producer and director Femi Odugbemi.

However, it is important that we acknowledge the remarkable work that these skilled behind-the-scenes professionals have accomplished in the last few years. Voting for the nominees for AMVCAs are open till Sunday, 24 August 2018. One may vote via Mobile/Web only by following these easy steps.
