The chief executive officer of Merqury Republic, Merqury Quaye, who doubles as the organizer of the Ghana DJ Awards, has criticized the organizers of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) for not recognizing the contributions of disc jockeys (DJs) toward the progress of the music industry in Ghana.

He noted that since the awards scheme was established the orgainsers have failed to include a category to reward hardworking DJs in the music industry.

Mr Merqury Quaye thinks DJs/promoters need to have a slot in the music awards nominations, even though DJs already have a separate award scheme.

Quaye, the host of 'Cruise Control' on Hitz FM in an interview with Doreen Avio on his show, condemned the organizers of the VGMA for their refusal to recognize the contributions of Ghanaian DJs who are all stakeholders in the music industry.

“When it comes to the music industry there are three key players – the performer, the producer and the promoter. I think the VGMA has left one person out, the promoter, and the promoter is the DJ. I think that VGMA doesn't respect the promoter and it's very unfortunate,” he lamented.

He went further to query the organizers of the awards – Charterhouse –  as to whether they have issues with DJs in the country.

“Is it because Charterhouse doesn't respect DJs? Is it because they think that DJs don't need to be recognized or they don't deserve to be nominated? What is it? We need answers,” he quizzed.
