As part of activities for this year's Ghana Music Week (GMW) Festival 2017, the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) will host the fifth edition of Ghana Music Honours on March 4 at the National Theatre in Accra.

The event, according to the organisers, will be graced by the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Catherine Abelema Afeku, government officials and members of the diplomatic corps.

This year's honours will see the introduction of a few changes in line with the trends in the music industry. This year's Ghana Music Festival forms part of the year-long Ghana @ 60 celebrations.

The Ghana Music Honours was established in 2012 to cultivate the understanding, appreciation and advancement of the contribution of recorded music to the Ghanaian society; from the artistic and technical legends of the past to the musical breakthroughs of succeeding generations of music professionals.

The honour is awarded by MUSIGA to recognise outstanding achievement in the music industry. The awards ceremony has grown over the years and now has 20 categories adjudged by an academy of musicians (peers) and one popular category voted for by the general public.

The awards ceremony which happens on the GMW International Music Expo Night features Ghanaian and international performances and is strictly by the union's invitation. Over the years, invitees have been musicians, outstanding members of the Ghanaian society and members of the diplomatic corp.

The GMW Festival 2017 is part of the activities marking the Ghana @ 60 celebrations. Other activities lined up for GMW 2017 include a three-day festival of exhibitions, musical concerts and a children's games village at the Black Star Square from March 10 to 12.
