“Osugyani” hit singer, Kwaisey Pee has hit hard at successive leaderships of Ghana’s music industry for failing to put in place the necessary structures over time to safeguard the wellbeing and financial future of the Ghanaian musician. This, he says has resulted in the inability of most Ghanaian musicians encouraging their wards to also pursue music as a sole career when they come of age.

The artiste who’s currently embarking on a “Hit Hard” Tour of media houses in the Accra metropolis after which he will tour media houses in the other regional capitals, made this assertion on the back of a heated discussion involving himself, Akosua Agyepong and Host of Atinka Showbiz, Odeefour ‘the Accra Mayor’ Saturday, the 27th February.

The discussion centered on whether the Ghanaian music industry has been properly set up with available structures to aid in the career growth of the musician and tight systems to check and track the use of musicians’ musical works and collect royalties for them.

Many have accused the operations of successive leaderships of two key musician associations in Ghana that is MUSIGHA and GHAMRO for the absence of certain vital structures needed to make the music industry as robust as possible and worthy of emulation by other Music Societies and organizations in other African countries.

There had been times that some musicians had sought to juxtapose the structures of Music Societies in the western world against that of the Music Industry in Ghana and had scored ours very low marks in terms of proper structures which will encourage musicians to continue pursuing the music career solely. One of the physical evidence which these tough critics cited is the manner in which some retired and old musicians struggle with even low hospital bills and die as paupers leaving behind dependents to the surprise of colleague musicians who are still alive.

The “Osugyani” King who happens to be one of the sons of the late Agyeiku, highlife legend who was with the Yamoah’s band was asked if doing music in Ghana was lucrative enough for Ghanaian musicians to encourage their wards to follow their footsteps and he said,

“Ghanaian musicians can’t advice their children to go into it [referring to the music career] because there are no proper structures and they know the suffering they go through and sometimes the sacrifices they make to put smiles on the faces of their fans by recording songs for them to enjoy. So they fear to see their children go through the same predicament.”

Kwaisey Pee was in the studios of Atinka 104.7FM to promote his latest song, “Osugyani” which is catching up with music lovers at a fast pace.
