THE 'PRHYME MINISTER'

11.03.2007 LISTEN

He arrived into this world as Leslie Gerald Okyne on the 24th of December a whole leap of years ago in Geneva in Switzerland! The youngest and tiniest of his 3 brothers, he went to Christ the King International School, Achimota Secondary School and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.

Welcome the “chief inspector, your inspirer's inspirer, the weekend warmer, the party rocker -the Prhyme Minister a.k.a… the PM", one of the hottest DJs on London's first licensed African radio station, Rainbow Radio. If music was the food of life, he would be a very fat person considering how much music he consumes a day! He is not sure if he is still a music artist but he is one half of the hiplife group called KgPM. They released their debut album in 2001 called 'Saa Na Wotie', which had some songs featuring the likes of Obrafour, KK Fosu, Dogo and 'Eugene aka Azoopete (of Praye fame). The album, produced by Hammer of The Last Two, which was on Lowdown Records, was critically acclaimed but lacked the promotion it needed. He prefers to describe the album as 'slept on'. As to whether the group still records, PM says, “well it's hard to answer this question because Kgee is in the US whiles I am in the UK which obviously makes it quite difficult to collaborate, however I recorded a song with Tinny in Ghana a few months ago and we'll see how that goes. We [Kgee and I] are looking to come together in the nearest possible time to record some of the songs we have written.”

PM began radio on Radio Continental, a campus-based station when he was in school. He was introduced to Rainbow Radio in May 2005 and now his show is aired twice a week between 12 and 3pm on Thursdays and Fridays, with a very unique, somewhat sexy voice. The shows boasts of a good mix of old and new Ghanaian hiplife tunes, spiced with some witty quotes and jokes he calls 'nonsense' (call it taking the piss!!), some artist features and sometimes interesting discussions/interviews! He believes that life is not permanent hence "do not take it too serious"! The show appeals to almost every age group but mostly appeals to young girls! Guests on his show have included Reggie Rockstone, Tic Tac, Praye and Kwabena Kwabena. Occassionally he DJs in a few Ghanaian pubs around London.

At the moment, he is studying a one year Masters in Audio Production at the University of Westminster in Harrow. The PM in his free time (which is quite limited) surfs the net, watches at most one movie or listens to some good tunes - that is aside making people laugh! Like he always says: “half of being smart, is knowing what you are dumb at!” (Catch 'PM on the PM' between 12 and 3pm every Thursday and Friday on www.rainbowradio.co.uk or www.spectrumradio.net, otherwise on Sky TV 0207).
