
Submission for the Golden Icons Academy Movie Awards (GIAMA) ended on the 12th of June, 2012. The Awards which is scheduled for October 20th, 2012 has categories like: Best Motion Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best New Actor, Best New Actress, Best Original Screenplay, Best Indigenous Film (native language), Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Film (comedy), Best Film (drama), Best Film Director, Best Film Producer, GIAMA Lifetime Achievement Award, GIAMA Image Award, GIAMA Humanitarian Award (actor/actress), GIAMA Heroes Award (professional athlete), Best Costume, Best Male Act (Nollywood-USA), Best Female Act (Nollywood-USA), Best Nollywood- USA film, Best Nollywood- USA film (comedy), Best Male Act (Viewer's Choice), Best Female Act (Viewer's Choice), Best Male Act (Hollywood - Viewer's Choice), Best Female Act (Hollywood - Viewer's Choice).
The event will serve as a forum for creating a platform that will ensure continuous rewarding of individuals that have exemplified competence, diligence and innovation in the African film making profession. GIAMA's sole focus is to recognize excellence by annually honouring achievement of Actors and Actress, Writers, Directors, Producers, Technicians and other personalities in the film making industry of Africa and Africans in the Diaspora. So far, 187 movies from Ghana, Nigeria, and USA have been submitted for screening and in an interview with Bode Ojo the CEO of GIAMA awards: the jury was shock at the number of movies submitted as at the closing date. “In fact, it beat our expectation and surprisingly, we had seven movies from francophone and Portuguese African countries making a total of 194 movies. Screening is really going to be tough because from the few that I've seen determine correctly that the movie industry in Africa is getting better and bigger now.” He added.
