Celebrants bear relics that have rich stories of the people

Hundreds of thousands of celebrants Saturday joined in the final phase of the annual Homowo festival (Kpa shimo) of the people of Teshie, a suburb of Accra.

The festival is marked to celebrate the people's victory over famine. You can visit our photo gallery to view photos from the celebration.

Watched by several thousands yet observers and followers, the final day of the near-month long festival sees sons and daughters of one of Accra's most vibrant towns take to the streets singing and parading flags, artifacts and other relics colloquial only to Teshie.

The Teshie Homowo marks the very final of the festival in the entire Ga land, and prior to the ultimate sese bumo cleansing rite that signals the end of the day, celebrants clad in clothes of virtually all professions and situations imaginable – nurses, policemen, soldiers, fishermen, hunters, sportsmen, warriors, farmers, newlyweds and some not too sightly - throng the streets to make merry.
