Brazil to introduce "Choro" music to Ghana

Accra, Sept. 1, GNA - The Brazilian Embassy in Ghana as part of their Independence Day anniversary celebration this year, is introducing "choro" music to Ghana.

Choro music, which is among the most popular kind of music played in Brazil, is composed with mixture of European and African culture. Mr Danilo Zimbres, an official of the Ministry of External Relations of Brazil, at a press conference in Accra on Thursday, said the introduction of choro music to Ghana was to help reinforce the long and solid ties between Brazil and Africa, especially Ghana. "We want to share with Ghana the amazing experience of choro music, which is very popular in Brazil", he said.

Choro music derived from the English word, rhythm, is an instrumental music, which focuses on everyday issues in Brazil. Mr Zimbres is in the country with a group called "The Brazilian Choro Quintet" who will perform a series of concerts this month to entertain the public and also to learn from Ghanaian musicians. A major concert would be held on September 7, Brazil's Independence Day, at the Golden Tulip Hotel.

He announced that proceeds from the concert would be given to "Infanta Malaria" a Ghanaian NGO that educates people on the dangers of Malaria.

Mr Zimbres said there would also be a workshop to enable musicians from both countries to learn from each other. Choro music started becoming popular when local people in Brazil took interest in the European and African culture. It later became a mainstream music for all classes of people in Brazil.

In Brazil a National Choro Day, April 23, was instituted two years ago to celebrate Choro music.
