Helen Emerges Queen At 'Ultimate Dance Diva'
Helen Dery, 21, popularly known as Queen, was crowned Ghana's ‘Ultimate Dance Diva’ when she danced her way past nine other young women to win the first edition of the Dance Queen Africa-Ghana competition held last Saturday at the Round Pavilion of the Accra International Trade Fair Centre.
Queen won a cash price of GH¢ 3,000 and will represent Ghana at the Africa event to be held in Nigeria next year. She will also be instrumental in the screening and auditioning of contestants for next year's Dance Queen Africa-Ghana show.
A past student of Great Lamptey Mills’ Senior Secondary School in Accra, Queen formed and managed the Queen Stars dance quartet for three years and won several inter-school dance contests in the Greater Accra Region. She hopes to enter School of Performing Arts at the University of Ghana, Legon and become a professional dancer later.
At the contest last Saturday, the ten finalists performed traditional, dancehall and freeclass pieces before the field was pared down to five: Becca, Nana Ama, Munira, Rita and Queen.
After another round of scintillating highlife movements, Queen emerged the winner by way of text messages received and input from the judges who were model/choreographer, Josh Ansah; musician/dancer, Akosua Agyapong and OBE TV hostess, Ama K. Abebrese.
Speaking to the Showbiz after the competition Queen expressed optimism that she will do Ghana proud at the Africa event next year.
Screw Face, Asaase Aban, Skinny Legend, H-Mode, Ayigbe Edem and Obuor treated the audience to some good music.
Dance Queen Africa, Ghana Season One was organised by TV Contents and sponsored by Lucozade, Yazz Sanitary Pad with support from Spendlove Boutique, Woman’s World Boutique, Jungle Sounds and Danny’s Décor.
