NDC National Communications Race: Why Sammy Gyamfi Stands Tall
12.02.2018 LISTEN

A leading member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and a former TEIN President at KNUST, Mahama Masawudu from Upper West Region has revealed the reasons why Sammy Gyamfi stands tall among others who are vying to become the National Communication Officer of the party.

A statement issued by the NDC youth activist and copied to GhanaWeb indicated that despite Sammy Gyamfi is a young guy but age doesn't play any role in Communications so those contenders who are saying Sammy Gyamfi is a young guy should refrain from it.

"Of course, there are those, who tend to advance the 'age argument' whenever they cannot match the logical prowess and eloquence of Sammy Gyamfi. I am sorry to tell them that maturity in political Communication has nothing to do with 'growing grey hair' or being a 'political godfather'. There is a fast-changing paradigm in political Communication strategy, that focuses on youthful dynamism and innovation", he explained.

According to him, Sammy Gyamfi has represented the interest of the NDC at various levels, from the student front to Regional and National portfolios.

He outlined some of the political leadership positions of Sammy Gyamfi; a Member of Ashanti Regional Communication Team of NDC, Spokesperson for the former Mayor of Kumasi Assembly, Mr. Kojo Bonsu, President for TEIN at KNUST from the year 2011 to 2012 among others.

He also revealed that Sammy Gyamfi is the current Student Representative Council (SRC) President of Ghana School of Law and according to Masawudu, this is a major milestone for a known NDC member to win such a key position in such a politically 'unfriendly institution'.

We tried to reach Sammy Gyamfi to confirm to us whether he has an interest in the position but couldn't reach him.

But our close sources tell us that Sammy Gyamfi will be contesting for the National Communication Officer position when nominations are officially opened.

Below is the full statement
THE RACE FOR THE NEXT NDC NATIONAL COMMUNICATION OFFICER: WHY SAMMY GYAMFI STANDS TALL!

I have known Sammy Gyamfi for close to a decade. Somewhere in 2008, in my second year at KNUST, I had relocated to the Unity Hall, from 'Katanga Hall', where I was originally domiciled as a first-year student in 2007.

As I went in and out of Unity Hall, I often noticed this vibrant young man with an unfamiliar appetite for arguments, at what was popularly known as the 'Conti Always Around'. Anytime I passed by, I would find this young man taking on a dozen others in a plethora of debates, ranging from politics to sports and lifestyle.

This same young man was later to be elected the PRO for TEIN-KNUST, whilst I was made the Vice-president, and subsequently, the substantive President for the 2010-2011 academic year.

During our time as TEIN executives, we shook the frontiers of student politics on KNUST campus, with our vibrant Communications wing, headed by the young Sammy Gyamfi. One issue that shot us to fame was our historic press conference which took on the leadership of UTAG for what we considered as a politically-motivated strike action against the then government of President Mills of blessed memory.

Sammy and I were threatened and vilified by our lecturers and the school authorities for tagging them as saboteurs of the Mills government. However, we were undaunted in our resolve to project and protect the interest of our party, the NDC on KNUST campus. Sammy Gyamfi later spearheaded an initiative called the 'State of the Better Ghana Agenda' (SOBGA), which projected the achievements of the President Mills government in the Ashanti Region. In the year I left KNUST (2011), Sammy Gyamfi was elected the President of TEIN, as my successor.

This marked a watershed moment in the birthing of a youthful gem who has become the toast of the rank and file of the NDC as far as political Communication is concerned.

It is obvious that, in opposition, the NDC needs young and vibrant communicators like Sammy Gyamfi to project the 'new-look NDC', with a focus on the youth.

Of course, there are those, who tend to advance the 'age argument' whenever they cannot match the logical prowess and eloquence of Sammy Gyamfi.
