Accra, July 25, GNA - Mr Samuel Atta Akyea, the Minister of Works and Housing, has urged local contractors and engineers to strive for the highest level of competence.

He said this was because the award of contracts was based on merit or who could do quality work, and not whether a person was a citizen or not.

The Minister said when he interacted with journalists, at the end of a day's working tour within Accra, which saw him visiting the Engineering Council of Ghana, the Architects Registration Council, the UNDP Flats and the Hydrological Services Department.

He said whilst there were some very good local contractors and engineers, there were others that lacked the expertise to perform excellently.

The Minister said one measure that could help to ensure that these professionals improved to match the world best, was for them to come up with superintending bodies that would ensure that the right standards were set and adhered to.

He said there was also the need to create internal capacity building outfits, to ensure that standard practice prevailed.

The Minister was accompanied by his two deputies, Mrs Freda Opare Prempeh and Eugene Boakye Antwi, as well as a number of senior officials from the Ministry.
