Old Tulaku, a suburb of Ashaiman in the Greater Accra Region, became the centre of attraction when some angry youth disrupted a scheduled press conference organised by the youth wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the area.

The aggrieved youth, believed to be loyalists of the defeated parliamentary candidate of Ashaiman in the last general elections, Alhaji Labaran Yakubu Barry, stormed the party office and scattered tables and chairs arranged for the press conference.

As if that was not enough, the men further heckled the members of the Concerned Grassroots Members of the NPP in Ashaiman before locking up the party office.

Some media practitioners invited to cover the press conference were not spared of the unfortunate incident, as their microphones positioned for the press conference were also thrown away.

Speaking with the media after the confusion, they vowed to resist any attempt to organise news conferences which might go against their preferred candidate who adds up to some 11 candidates vying for the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) position in Ashaiman.

“We shall not allow anybody in Ashaiman to organise any press conference anywhere in Ashaiman because it is an agenda to promote other potential candidates. The people of Ashaiman want Alhaji Labarran so we will not allow anybody to come and thwart our effort.

Alhaji has done a lot for the party, he spent his money on the party and this is his time to reap from where he had sowed. We shall not allow his efforts to go waste. No Alhaji, nobody,” they voiced out.

“If Alhaji is not given any appointment, we shall not allow anybody to get the position of MCE in Ashaiman. We shall make Ashaiman ungovernable for any MCE apart from Alhaji. No Alhaji, no MCE,” they threatened.

The angry men, numbering about 20, further warned the party hierarchy against reappointment of the former MCE, Mr Albert Okyere, as the suitable nominee, since they would aggressively oppose his nomination.

According to them, “We don't want Okyere and if the party dares bring him, we shall create total chaos in Ashaiman.”
