Old-Ningo (GAR), Oct 19, GNA - Mr Sylvester Tetteh, New Patriotic Party's (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Ningo-Prampram has chided government for failing to resource the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE).

Mr Tetteh said it was so sad and disappointing that the NCCE lacked the needed logistics to carry out public education and engagement.

He criticized the government on Tuesday when participants at an NCCE durbar at Old-Ningo expressed their disappointment at the lack of frequent public education and engagement by the Commission in the villages.

The NCCE is a constitutional institution established by an Act of Parliament and its mandate enshrined in the 1992 Constitution to formulate, implement and oversee programmes intended to inculcate into the citizens of Ghana, awareness of their civic responsibilities and appreciation of their rights as a people.

He charged the NCCE to boldly insist on getting the needed resources to work with since their work was enshrined in the constitution.

"The work of the NCCE is enshrined in the constitution therefore they must not be afraid of political leaders", he stressed.

Mr.Tetteh noted that he had a better understanding of the work and importance of the NCCE when he joined the civic club during his school days adding, the Commission's work should not be undervalued.

He therefore urged government to at least provide an official vehicle to the Ningo-Prampram District office of the NCCE to facilitate workers' movement to the scattered villages and towns in the district to educate them on the December 7, general elections.

Mr Tetteh also called for the provision of logistics to the Police to enable them fully monitor the elections and enforce peace in the area.

He commended the Police for their professional work in the District and charged them to deal fairly with anybody who would foment trouble at the various polling stations irrespective of their party affiliations and positions.

The NPP parliamentary candidate however expressed his unhappiness about the naming of Ningo Prampram among the flash points for the elections.

He blamed that on the internal wrangling in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) during its parliamentary primaries and advised them to desist from giving the area a bad name.

Miss Gifty Agyeiwaa Badu, Ningo-Prampram District NCCE Director, responding to questions from participants, said even though her outfit was logistically constrained, they organized a number of educational programmes for faith based organizations and other identifiable groups.

Miss Badu expressed the hope that a request for a pick-up from the District Assembly would be met to enable them intensify their educational programmes and engagements with residents.

She however pleaded with Assembly members and unit committee members, as well as the Inter-Party Dialogue Committee members to augment the effort of the NCCE by educating people in their areas.
