Why Teach your kids to be independent

OCT 2, 2017 LISTEN

Many of us have received the message that the more involved we are in our children’s learning, the better off they will be. Though to a large extent, this might be true, but in a way, sometimes getting too involved might do more harm than good.

For example, once children enter middle school, help with homework can actually bring test scores down. Other involvement, such as meeting with teachers and taking disciplinary action against a child when they don’t do well, can make kids more anxious or have no positive effect at all.

In this lesson of independent learning, we would be looking at two sides of the coin:

1. Why you must teach your child to be an independent learner.

2. How you can teach your child to become an independent learner.

To begin with, let's start looking at the why!

According to recent studies, the most successful children are those whose parents set high expectations and then step back. These kids were able to take initiative in their own learning.

The following, however, are few reasons why you must teach your children the need to become an independent learner.

Allows for multi-tasking
It makes teaching with multiple children much easier. It gives you more time to work one-on-one with each of your kids. It frees you up to get important household jobs done like cooking dinner. It gives you short bursts of free time to catch your breath, plan and prepare.

Personalize learning
Thinking for yourself makes the learning your own. It creates your own moral compass. It’s no longer what mama said, but what the child believes for him/herself. This is crucial for helping your children stay close to God when they leave home. Whether that’s a sleepover with a friend or a college dorm, they won’t heed mama’s words. They will remember God’s truth that has been hidden in their hearts and molded into their character.

Prerequisite for employment
Employers don’t like to babysit…employers need independent thinkers and workers to get the job done. There is nothing more annoying than an employee who is at your desk every 5 minutes with a new problem. Teach your kids to solve those problems so they will be desirable in the workplace.

Saves Time
Time is precious. Let’s face it. No one has a bunch of extra time floating around. Why spend your time babysitting menial tasks when you could be enjoying your child? It’s so much more fun to do a science experiment together than to fill your time reading a worksheet to your 4th grader, right? I’d much rather teach them to be independent so that I can use my energy for the things that they really need me for.

Further learning:
When you teach a child to be an independent learner, it becomes a natural habit.

He/she becomes a lifelong learner. He may find it easier to succeed in college or any post-secondary training or education and he can also learn any new skill necessary for a job.

If you train your kid to be an independent learner, you may find that even after their school “assignments” has been completed; they may create assignments of their own and learns something new even without your prompting.

In fact, it really pays to teach your children to be independent learners.

Hope you’ve had a ton of value from this post. In our next article, we would be looking at the step by step guide to teaching your child to be an independent learner.
