Beauty Is More Than Skin Deep

05.01.2014 LISTEN
By David Fenelus

The typical average person sprays, lathers, massages, about a 100 different products on their bodies' everyday all day. What are we doing to our skin? Do we know what is happening inside of our bodies, and do we know how those carcinogens get there? What is the largest organ in your body? Is it your heart, your kidney, your liver? Most people don't know that the largest organ of the body is the skin. In adults the skin weighs about six pounds to ten pounds. That is amazing! The skin is fascinating, and is designed to protect against external forces. The skin is comprised of three major regions. I will not go in to a full dialogue of the different layers. It is basic biology of a 6th grade biology class. We have to be very careful what we introduce our bodies to, there are some toxins that penetrate our bodies through the skin, and they are very harmful, and those chemicals over the years will set up shop. Our skin absorbs number of pounds of cosmetics within a year. Would you knowingly rub human carcinogen onto your body? For, example there is a chemical called Acrylamide when in contact causes damage to the nervous system, and causes numbness. This chemical is a sealant, and can found in a lot of products. You only get one skin, and you want to be found taking care of it. Your skin is like a loofa, and acts as a barrier, but how good is that barrier. I don't want to sound like a book that is constantly saying over and over, why we should go organic, but uh really why not. The fact is, no one really knows how certain chemicals affect us over a time, or how they react in our bodies in combination. Other chemicals have known dangers: Phthalates, for example, which are often found in fake fragrances, are a class of hormone disruptor known to cause birth defects, sperm damage, infertility, and the feminization of baby boys, for instance. How healthy is beauty regime?
