The governing National Democratic Congress is banking on President John Mills’ Better Ghana Agenda to win the Wulensi seat which was declared vacant after the passing of the independent Member of Parliament, Alhaji Sani Iddi.
The Deputy General Secretary of the party, George Lawson, told Joy News that the people of Wulensi are living witnesses to the “good works” of the president and are feeling the better Ghana Agenda.
His comments came shortly after the Electoral Commission announced July 31 as date for a by-election in the Wulensi Constituency.
The EC announcement is in fulfillment of Article 112(5) of the 1992 Constitution which states that: 'Whenever a vacancy occurs in Parliament, the Clerk to Parliament shall notify the Electoral Commission in writing within seven days after the vacancy occurred, a by-election shall be held within thirty days of the vacancy occurred.'
The Electoral Commission said it will take nominations for the said by-election on Tuesday 3rd and Wednesday 4th of July 2012 at the district office of the Commission at Wulensi between the hours of 8:00am and 12:30pm and 1:30pm and 5pm.
But the NDC appears ready for the Wulensi battle.
George Lawson said the NDC is already at work to add the Wulensi seat to the majority side.
He said the party already has a candidate, George Maban, who was elected in the primaries a few months ago.
While conceding that Wulensi is a swing constituency, the deputy General Secretary said “ours is to win every election we compete in” and this is no exception.
Relatedly, the Electoral Commission has told Joy News it will not be using the biometric voters’ register for next month’s by-election at Wulensi.
There had been speculations that the Wulensi by-election would make a good pilot for the new register, but Principal Public Relations Officer at the EC, Sylvia Annor, said the register wouldn't be ready by then.
