Asante United Front Attacks Rawlings

An Association described by many well meaning Ghanaians as A probable offshoot of secessionism, the Asante United Front has been founded in Kumasi.

Even though it claims to be a non-political organisation which seeks to play the watch-dog role on issues affecting Ashantis, its first assignment appears to be asking Ex-President Jerry John Rawlings to desist from making statements that are likely to divide Ghana. It has as its chairman Opanin Kwame Afreh.

A statement issued in Kumasi and signed by the Chairman, expressed support for the action being taken by the government to bring the ex-President under control in reaction to purported utterances of Mr.Rawlings on Friday, August 9, 2002 at the inauguration of the women's wing of the NDC at Aboabo in Kumasi.

The Kumasi Front which depended on a newspaper publication on an event that took place in Kumasi, said the speech of the former President, was aimed at inciting his listeners and by extension, the people of Kumasi, the seat of Asanteman.

While conceding that like every Ghanaian Mr.Rawlings has the right to go to any part of the country and participate in any lawful activity, the Front is of the strong view that remarks such as the August 9 Aboabo declaration should not be the mark of a former Head of State and government.

They also oppose what they term his involvement in activities which are likely to inflame passions. It therefore appealed to the government to take appropriate measures to stop the repeat of what happened during the late ex-President Limann's rule.
