Police Urge To Be Neutral

DCOP S. Andoh-Kwofie, a Reviewing Officer, has called on members of the Police Administration to ensure that any assignment they undertake is non-partisan, particularly as we are in an election year.

According to him, with just a few months for Ghanaian voters to go to the polls, it was very essential that all police personnel in the country became neutral in the discharge of their duties.

DCOP Andoh-Kofie made the call during the passing-out ceremony of 99 recruits at the Ashanti Regional Police Training School in Kumasi.

He said the services of police personnel were always needed in the country, and therefore urged the 99 recruits to be humble, tolerant and show respect at all times.

He urged all young people who were enlisted into the Ghana Police Service not to labour under the erroneous impression that they could use their time in the Service to quickly acquire wealth for themselves, adding that it was essential for the youth to understand the nature of work of the Police Service before applying for the post.

He said the main duties of police personnel were to stamp out robbery and other crimes from society and ensure law and order.

DCOP Andoh-Kofie however said the Police Administration could only succeed in the fight against crime with the support and co-operation of the general public, and therefore called on communities and churches to come together and discuss issues of security with their local police for quick and effective solution of their problems.

The Police Reviewing Officer congratulated the new recruits for passing out successfully, and urged them to show commitment to the various tasks they would be assigned to do.

The overall Best Recruit went to Ruben Seidu while Jones Wallace Arhin became Best in Academics. Best in Drill went to Gideon Tanpruk.

In a related development, the Police Administration used the occasion to pass-out 23 police cadets from Supreme Saviour International School in Kumasi.

According to DCOP Andoh-Kofie, the Police Service's programme dubbed “Catch Them Young” which is the police–student cadet corps, had been formed in over 20 Senior High and Junior High Schools all over the country.

According to him, Supreme Saviour International School was the first police-student cadet corps to join the police recruits to pass-out due to their commitment and hard work.

“However, your inauguration today makes you only a fully fledged Cadet Crops and does not confer on you the powers of arrest as officers,” he warned.

He said the step was to inculcate in the youth the art of policing so that even at their age, they could offer some degree of protection to their communities.

DCOP Andoh-Kofie stressed that any attempt by the police-student cadet crops to involve in any unlawful activities would not be entertained.

He said the Supreme Saviour International School cadet corps was granted permission in 2007 and even though it had not been formally inaugurated, it was awarded the best Regional Cadet Corps by the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council during the 2008 Independence Day Anniversary parade.
