NSC Statement On May 9 Disaster

Yesterday marked the 7th anniversary of the tragic incident that occurred at the Accra Sports Stadium and which culminated in the unfortunate death of 127 young soccer patrons and enthusiasts after a football match between Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko.

We wish to assure all, that Ghana and Ghanaians have learnt their lessons well. Indeed, the construction of the new stadia have been informed by the recommendations of the Okudjeto Committee which have gone a long way to facilitate smooth entry and exit even during peak matches during Ghana 2008.

There was therefore an incident-free event and we shall continue to ensure just that. Never again should this happen.

The council acknowledges improved crowd behaviour and commends management of clubs especially, for their outreach and public education efforts.

The National Sports Council still wishes to appeal to football clubs, supporter unions and the media, to continue with their public information and education drive to promote healthy rivalry in competitive sports.

It is the commitment of government, the sector ministry and the council to ensure an enabling environment for the promotion and enhancement of sports business and sports tourism agenda for economic growth which could only be possible with assurance of safety.
