German superfan turns entire street into World Cup tribute in Essen
A superfan in the German city of Essen has transformed his entire street into a World Cup-themed display to rally support for the national team. Seventy-year-old Achim Klimmek has decorated the area with hundreds of flags and thousands of fixtures under a theme he calls “Back to the Roots,” aimed at inspiring Germany after early exits in the last two World Cups. Klimmek says the project is intended to revive memories of past successes and motivate the team to perform better this time. He described years of gradual expansion of the decorations, saying each European Championship and World Cup adds to the display. Locals say the street has become a major attraction, with traffic slowing as drivers stop to take photos. Klimmek says while weather delays have complicated preparations, public reaction has been overwhelmingly positive, turning the street into a symbol of football passion and national hope.
