Dual oxygen supply systems on the world's highest railway
This year marks the 20th anniversary of China's Qinghai-Xizang Railway. As the world's highest altitude railway, it stretches 1,956 kilometers in total. At 4,000 meters above sea level, thin oxygen levels on the surrounding plateau often cause discomfort for visitors. But inside carriages on the Qinghai-Xizang Railway, passengers breathe as easily as they do at lower altitudes, thanks to the train's bespoke onboard oxygen supply system.
The rail service deploys two types of oxygen delivery for highland conditions. The first is diffused oxygen, which injects oxygen into the fresh air circulation system to steadily lift oxygen concentration throughout the entire cabin. The second option is individual oxygen taps installed next to each sleeper berth, allowing passengers to receive concentrated supplemental oxygen on demand.
Developed to counter the hazards of thin air across the world's highest-altitude railway route, the dual-setup design curbs altitude sickness and improves the traveling experience for people crossing the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau.
