Regional Director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in Tarkwa, Derick Ashia Logo, is calling on traditional leaders to intensify the fight against illegal mining by invoking traditional sanctions on persons who enter protected rivers, streams, and forests to engage in galamsey.
He warns that illegal miners are becoming increasingly defiant and, in some cases, armed—posing serious risks to enforcement officers involved in monitoring and environmental protection operations. The EPA says stronger community and traditional involvement is critical to protecting Ghana's natural resources.
