Panic in Tyre as Israel expands evacuation order across southern Lebanese city
Israeli attacks on the southern Lebanese city of Tyre have killed at least eight people after the military issued a blanket evacuation order covering the entire coastal city, including its historic Christian quarter. Rescue teams continued searching for survivors in a residential area struck earlier, with fears the death toll could rise. The latest order instructs residents of Tyre, surrounding towns and Palestinian refugee camps to move north of the Zahrani River. It marks the first time residents of the predominantly Christian quarter have been ordered to leave, triggering panic and a new wave of displacement. Local officials say shelters are already full, leaving many with nowhere to go. Tyre has largely become a ghost town as businesses remain shut and residents fear further strikes. More than 1.2 million people have been displaced across Lebanon since the escalation of hostilities in October last year.
Al Jazeera's Obaida Hitto reports from Tyre, southern Lebanon.
