Two pupils win scholarship award

Accra, April 16, GNA - Two Junior High School (JHS) pupils- Master Enoch Tsetse and Miss Ewurafua Asanie have won the finals of the La Nkwantanang Municipal Assembly Maths and Science Quiz Competition in Accra.

Master Tsetse is a form three pupil at Fire Armour JHS, Madina and Miss Asanie, also a form three pupil at St Andrews Junior High School 'B', PRESEC Medina.

They were awarded full scholarship by eSyllabus for Africa, an NGO to cover their secondary school education and tertiary education if they perform well at that level.

The competition was organised by eSyllabus for Africa in collaboration with Ghana Education service to assist brilliant pupils in the country's basic schools to further their education.

Master Tsetse had 65 points to become the first while Miss Asanie garnered 51 points to get second position.

Other contestants are Master Maxford Asare, WASS Experimental JHS, Adenta, Master Williams Kwesi Dei, St Andrews JHS 'A' and Miss Barbara Ayivor, Immanuel Presby JHS, Madina.

All of them received T-Shirts, certificate of participation and esyllabus branded Text Books.

Mrs Rhoda Abiba Akwetey, Deputy Director in-charge of Human Resource Management and Development, La Nkwantanang-Madina Education Directorate, commended the participating schools and their teachers for displaying peace, unity and hard-work throughout the competition.

She also commended the contestants for given brilliant answers to the questions and urged pupils to study hard to enable them pass their Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE).

Mrs Akwetey praised the winners of the competition for exhibiting brilliancy and asked the losers not to lose hope because there is more time for them to make amendment.

'This is not the end, you must continue to learn hard so that next year you can come and contest again,' she added.

Quame Zowonu, Country Director of eSyllabus for Africa, said the competition was a worthy course and applauded the contestants for putting in their best.

He said: "as eSyllabus for Africa, we wish to see all of them to come out successfully in their BECE.'

Mr Zowunu noted that the scholarship is extended to the tertiary level as long as the holders perform well to qualify.

"The bravery of the contestants showed that it does not matter, which school one attends but the effort each pupil put in his or her learning.

'I'm really proud of you all and I want to urge you to score good grades in your BECE to access the scholarship. I also want to urge the teachers to be in touch with the pupils after their examinations and submit their results on time to facilitate processing of the scholarship,' he added.

Master Tsetse and Miss Asanie said they came that far through hard work, dedication and motivation from well-wishers.

They urged their colleagues to also learn hard so that they can also win the competition next time and also thanked eSyllabus for the exposure.

Earlier, Mr Elvis Afriyie Donkor, the Quiz Master told the Ghana News Agency in an interview that the five contestants were brilliant and talented and he would be expecting good show.

'We want to select the best contestant from the best,' he added.

eSyllabus for Africa is a non-profit non-governmental organisation providing educational resources and interventions in Ghana and Africa as a whole, through the provision of scholarships and the distribution of digital educational materials to aid in teaching and learning from the basic level through senior high to the tertiary level of education.
