PLB Boss remains coy on calls for a 20-team league; says power lies with Congress

The Chairman of the Premier League Board, Ashford Tettey Oku has been coquettish on calls for a 20-team league in the 2016/17 season insisting the power to take such a decision lies in the bosom of the GFA Congress.

Former Ghana FA ExCo member M.N.S. Doe had suggested that the PLB should play a 20-team league to avoid prolonged legal battle which could delay the start of the upcoming league.

But the PLB Boss says it will only be possible if Congress approves it.

"It's a very interesting proposal and has been doing the rounds for a very long time.

"But if you look at the statutes of the FA and per the mandate of the PLB, we run a 16-club league, declare one champion and relegate three down," he told members of GSMA in an interview.

"That is the extent to which we can go. Anything that will suggest a 16-plus league will have to come from the FA through Congress and all the approved processes and procedures of the FA."

"So for now, I limit myself to the 16-club league but if and when it is that it should be anything else, then probably it must come from the FA through other consultations.

"But then far from boring you, we have declared our champions and far from any other legal tussles, three will go down," he added.

Techiman City have filed a protest against Berekum Chelsea with the legal battle between Dreams FC and Tema Youth still unfinished raising concerns ahead of the league next season.
