Accra, Aug. 31, GNA - Derrick Nii Nortey Dowuona from Osu has won this year's Osu Homowo Marathon race (Indegenous Category) held over the weekend.

Derrick Dowuona overcame stiff competition from the other runners to emerge winner and received a table-top fridge as his prize from the Osu mantse Nii Okwei Kinka Dowuona.

The event was organized by the Osu Traditional Council as part of activities marking this year's celebration of the Osu Homowo festival, sponsored by PZ Cussons, producers of detergents and assorted body lotions.

In the main race, Mr Raja Lagble of the military came first in the men's division and received an undisclosed amount of cash prize.

The Osu marathon, which is in its fifth year is aimed at unearthing talents in the community for sponsorship.

Nii Kinka Dowuona in an interview with the Ghana News Agency said there were many talented sportsmen in different sports, and appealed to corporate organizations to help develop the lesser sports in the country instead of concentrating on only football.

He expressed gratitude to PZ Cussons for supporting the Council in the organisation of the marathon race.
