London, Aug. 24, (GNA/dpa) - Bastian Schweinsteiger said Wednesday that Manchester United will be his final European club even though he's fallen out of favour with manager Jose Mourinho.

Schweinsteiger joined the Premier League club from Bayern Munich on a three-year contract in July 2015.

He made 31 appearances last season before a knee injury while on international duty in March ended his campaign.

The 32-year-old midfielder returned to play for Germany at Euro 2016 but has yet to see any action this season after being dropped by Mourinho to train with the club's reserves.

Schweinsteiger took to social media to update the "amazing fans" on his situation.

"MUFC will be my last club in Europe," he said on Twitter.

"I respect other clubs but Manchester United was the only one which could make me leave Bayern Munich.

"I will be ready if the team needs me. This is all I can say about the current situation.

"I want to thank the fans for the amazing support over the recent weeks."

The decision to drop Schweinsteiger was heavily criticized in Germany but Mourinho defended it by saying it came down to squad size.

Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge earlier this month ruled out bringing Schweinsteiger back, saying the club had "given no thoughts of a return."
